THE BALANCED SCORECARD
A "Blueprint for Turning Strategy Into Action"
To maintain competitiveness and increase earnings in a challenging global economic environment, successful corporate leaders are moving away from traditional performance management systems built around the annual budget or operational plan. Instead, they are opting for strategic enterprise management to transform their organisations, achieving dramatic results for overall corporate performance and staff morale.
Many of these companies have adopted the Balanced Scorecard (BSC), developed in 1992 by Robert S. Kaplan, Professor of Leadership Development, Harvard Business School and his partner, Dr. David P. Norton, President, Balanced Scorecard Collaborative. The Harvard Business Review describes the BSC as the most influential management concept in the past 75 years.
BSC BENEFITS
Aligns the organization and its resources around a common strategy and a shared vision
Promotes teamwork
Mobilizes employees at all levels of the organization in the planning and execution of strategic objectives, as well as the monitoring of performance targets and problem solving
Makes strategy a continuous process that is constantly reviewed and modified, based on experience
Defines the role of each employee and department and the expected outcomes
Fosters a culture of consistent workplace communication to stimulate employee awareness, win support and create a strategy-focussed organization, geared to adapt to the changing business environment.
